mbale to nairobi

we each rec'd a 530 wake up call so that we could be out by 6 am, necessary because of the 6 hour drive to kampala and then to entebbe airport. since we are on african time, we left closer to 7 am and made our way south.
by 10 am, we reached jinja, famous because it is one of the five sources of the nile river. we took a short detour so that we could see the actual spot where the nile river begins. after some photos and souvenir shopping; the girls went down to touch nile river water and rebecca is looking forward to telling mr. mullin, her social science teacher who has a focus on africa and the nile, all about it. there were also lots of monkeys hanging out in the trees so we took some pictures. we planned for lunch in kampala.....until we hit the outskirts of the city and came to an absolute traffic standstill. after about 30 minutes and some calculations, we decided to head straight to the airport and eat lunch after we get through security. we arrived back at entebbe about 1 pm. we said goodbye to isaac and our driver, samson. after immigration and all that, we ate at what looked like really bad airport food. for marc, it was heaven; since they had hamburgers! i didn't eat it. i inhaled it. amazing what a week of carbs will do to a diabetic who won't eat carbs. our flight to kenya was less than one hour and we made our way through customs and immigration in kenya. all one needs to do to make a friend in kenya is say: i love obama. smiles everywhere and they can't stop telling you how excited they are. it has come in handy several times. our tour company sent drivers to take us to the safari park hotel, a former british air force officer's base which is amazing, amazing, amazing. after a week in the ugandan bush, we were treated to a choice of 5 restaurants in the hotel. its also new years eve so they have lots of parties, a casino, and festivities everywhere. after a fantastic beni hana style japanese dinner, we headed back to our rooms, secured our mosquito nets, and fell asleep....until the exact stroke of midnight when the hotel's fireworks began. we think they were firing from our balcony because each one shook our building and our room. i simply bounced up and down in bed with each cannon shot, then fell right back asleep. happy new year!
